     Confining dogs and keeping them under control has been practiced for many centuries.  Dog leashes (ropes and chains) have been around since approximately 4400 B.C. and were basically used to control the dogs.  Control was necessary because dogs were primarily used for protection, for hunting, and for work.  It wasn't until around the 18th century that dogs turned from their previous usage to becoming household pets and status symbols.  Dogs were dressed up...walked, and controlled by stylish collars and leashes.  Gone were the old pet leashes of ropes and chains and now enters the new leather, cloth, and fashion dog collars and leashes.
